Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, said the debut hosting of this sport in Kenyan soil was proof that the country’s sporting landscape had grown exponentially to have the capability to successfully stage both continental and global sporting tournaments.
Speaking on Thursday during the official unveiling of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the championships, the PS termed it a rare honour for Kenya to host this prestigious competition, an event expected to bring thousands of athletes from over 150 countries.
“This is the first time these World Championships are being held in Kenya. As a country, we have developed the capacity to host global events because of the investments being injected in this sector,” he said.
He further noted that the competition was one of the main catalysts for marketing Kenya as a top tourism hub in the region, a factor set to elevate the country’s profile globally.
The event is also targeted to create awareness on climate action through adopting green themes. This includes planting of trees and supporting the adoption of clean energy sources.
The Korean ambassador to Kenya, HE Kang Hyung-Shi,k affirmed his country’s commitment to continue supporting the growth of diverse sports in Kenya.
While noting that Kenya has abundant talent, the ambassador pledged his support to initiatives that would help grow budding talents among the young people.
On his part, the Tourism PS John Ololtuaa said the continental and global sporting events Kenya is hosting had become key contributors to the surging numbers of tourists visiting the country.
